help plow the fields to using calculators in twentieth-century math class, man has always maintained control over what, when, where, why and how his machines operated. With AI, however,
the ability to impart this same ability into the mind of a computer is cause for debate where John Searle is concerned, a philosophy professor who fervently claims that "computers
cant think because they cant have intentional states. Through an ingenious thought experiment, he argues that strong AI (artificial intelligence) is misguided because computers lack the requisite conditions for
understanding" (Pojman, 2002, p. 228). Searle distinguishes between weak and strong computer AI as being the difference between utilizing a "very powerful tool" (Pojman, 2002, p. 278) to help the
human mind and having the computer actually be the mind with abilities to possess understanding and "other cognitive states" (p. 278). Here is where the student will discuss how
Searles Chinese language illustration defends his opinion. Searles conjecture is easy to agree with, being how the very nature of perception - apart
from scientific intervention - is that with which we, as humans, have been trained to discern, inasmuch as the certain quality of perception required within the world of science is
decidedly unique to human beings. Man looks upon his world as a direct reflection of him, his values, beliefs, experiences, conditions and development; contrarily, humanity may perceive the world
precisely and without delineation, seeing things for their exact meaning. Either way, mans consciousness, awareness and understanding are what dictate perception and ultimately challenge scientific purity. No matter how
sophisticated AI becomes over the scope of time, there will still be a line of separation that defines man from machine. That the entire purpose behind AI is to
