the Yucatan Peninsula, and Sosas story is his attempt to reintroduce this culture to the world. Sosas interest in the subject is more than academic: he is Maya, and it
is important to him that people understand his culture. Discussion The first impression a reader might get is that its odd to be reading about a Maya working as a
waiter in Cancun, because we are so used to thinking of these people as having long since vanished. So its jarring when we realize that Sosa is talking about the
Maya in present tense. Readers looking for the sort of adventurous tales that they remember from their studies of the conquest of South America (Aztec sacrifice, battles and all
that) will be disappointed; there is none of that here. In fact, the story is very simple: Honorio, who works as a waiter in Cancun, is coming home to his
village for a visit and his family is preparing to greet him. On his way home, Honorio meets a younger boy on the road; this youngster is trying to "pass"
as a Mestizo in Cancun, rather than allowing people to know hes a Maya. Honorio talks to him and helps him understand that he should be proud of his heritage,
and they walk back to the village together. The boy goes to his family, and Honorio to his, where the celebration begins. The story doesnt develop the characters to
any depth at all, nor does it discuss family relationships in detail. Still, Sosa manages to convey the idea that Maya families are extremely close, supportive and loving. He also
shows that this is a vibrant culture that wants to hold onto its unique identity. But there is no real conflict in the story, which is the heart of any
