Perhaps the reaction most of us have to this story of the Salem witch trials is indicative of its power, or perhaps we are just disturbed by the idea that lies, stupidity, jealousy and venality could send a good man to his death. This paper discusses the play with regard to John Proctors moral dilemma and the choices he makes. Discussion The society in which the play is set is so repressive that its stifling. As with any community that represses natural emotions under a heavy blanket of respectability and "proper" behavior, Salem is seething underneath. This is not unique to them-any time normal human functioning is repressed, aberrations result; the Victorian age is a case in point. Its rigid code for women resulted in a weird double standard in which wives were simply supposed to put up with their husbands infidelities-men strayed to prostitutes and other women because wives were kept in complete ignorance of sexual matters. Salem is such a closed, repressed, and consequently dysfunctional society. And in this society, John Proctor, who is a good man, has made a mistake. Hes had an affair with a young woman, Abigail Williams, described as "seventeen ... a strikingly beautiful girl, an orphan, with an endless capacity for dissembling" (Miller, 1959, p. 487). She is convinced that she can get John to leave his wife for her, and sets out to accomplish just that-by having Johns wife Elizabeth condemned as a witch. As the play progresses, suspicion grows, until finally the only way to stop the madness is for John to tell the truth: that he and Abigail were lovers, and that she is lying in court to condemn Elizabeth.
