who was considerably more interesting than that of his counterpart, God, mirrors the wanton desires surging upward through each and every mortal being, yet he also symbolizes the precise presence
those same mortals are trying to escape. Such is the saying, "The devil made me do it," Satan exemplifies both the humanness of people as well as the side
of them so easily controlled by sin. Similarly, Adams own composition varies little from that of Satans, inasmuch as his actions, too, are motivated by personal, selfish desires.
Comparing and contrasting the two characters allows one to recognize the all-too-familiar self-seeking characteristics still present in contemporary society. "The poems theme is nothing less than the origin of
evil itself, which Milton sees as being embedded in mans nature as a result of the original transgression and subsequent sins of humanitys common ancestors" (Anonymous, no date, p. paradise.html).
Satans purpose in Miltons work is to demonstrate how humans can so easily fall from grace and be lead astray, for he is
the root of all evil and understands the temptations that arise and are so effortlessly obtained. It is important for the student remember that Satan, too, was once in
divine company but all too suddenly succumbed to temptation and became the gatekeeper of Hell -- a place of consequence where one goes whose choices have lead him down the
wrong road. This is Satans primary motive in Paradise Lost: to illustrate just how simple it is to be influenced by sin.
Adam can easily relate to Satans character, inasmuch as seduction at one time or another has tempted him, which can readily be attributed to the notion of free will.
