the separation of Church and State served as a basis for the actions of men like Thomas Jefferson. In fact, it has been suggested that Lockes views on government
outlined in his Second Treatise of Government were so important to shaping the American views of government in the early stages that Thomas Jefferson made it required reading for all
of his classes in politics at the University of Virginia (Citizen Soldier, 2002). Locke believed in the fundamental rights of individuals to make their own determinations and to
integrate their own goals and objectives through the protection of government. Government stands, therefore, as a tool for the protection of rights, not to drive specific views or to
support the religious affections of one group over another. Locke argued that the Law of Nature must stand as "an Eternal Rule to all Men, Legislators as well as
others. The rules that they make for other Mens Actions, must, as well as their own and other Mens Actions, be conformable to the Law of Nature, i.e. to
the Will of God..." (Citizen Soldier, 2002). At the same time, Locke argued that human sanctions in the form of laws or declarations cannot speak out against the Will
of God, nor can they deny the rights of individuals to their separate and distinct beliefs. Locke also argued that man should
have the right to acquisition and the right to benefit from his own labor. In fact, it was Lockes contention that government should exist to support the efforts of
the individual man towards personal gain. Lockes views, though, were also linked to land ownership, which at the time was defined by sovereign control over land. Locke challenged
