are still current today. Ideas : Locke gathered his ideas from talking to his friends and reflecting upon their answers and his own thoughts. He was also intrigued
with the way we think, and what prompts us to think the way we do. Therefore he broke complex ideas down into the following: Modes: Are complex ideas
made up of simple, or simpler elements. Substances: Complex ideas but related to a particular topic or subject, but within these complex ideas are sensations and reflections. An
example might be the idea of my car. It gives me a sense of freedom; I can feel the wind blowing on a hot day when the windows are
down, or the air from the heater that makes me glad that I have remembered to bring gloves when it is snowing outside. All these are associations about my
car - but they are made up of other components or memories of experiences. Relations: Are the complex ideas in the ways in which we may be connected to each
other; one way to understand this is considered the idea of cause and effect. When you make tea for me you are doing more than the physical act of
the tea, thus a complex idea is "brewing." The making of the tea connects us in a unique way that is singular to the two of us. Moral agent
Locke connects person with moral agent - one who takes responsibility for ones actions. And Locke feels that the person claims those actions for his own. If we
claim actions or behaviors as our own, we are then acting, according to Locke with a certain sense of free agency or morality. We have chosen. We have claimed
