and thus he is often seen as very confusing if not offensive by some. The following paper examines what influences him and his designs, with a focus on his inspiration
from the homeless. John Gallianos Fashions In best understanding what inspires him and the controversy that surrounds him we first look at an article titled "Fetishism on the
Runway: Chic or Sick?" by Suzy Menkes. Menkes (2004) states, "For the fall/winter high fashion Paris season, Freud and fetishism were his starting point for a powerful but disturbing show
that began with a bishop corseted and padded into a wicked take on Diors famous New Look. It went on to explore perverse sexual fantasies from bestiality through maids and
military uniforms." Clearly such a presentation is something that would cause a great deal of controversy, but also demonstrates how Galliano is quite an artist who is inspired by many
things, not just fashion. He is inspired by history, and by historical figures. He is inspired by religion and by society. He has been inspired by great artists of
the past and is generally inspired by looking at the world around him. Such an open and appreciative eye led him, at one point to find inspiration in the homeless.
And the point was not to make fun of the homeless or to make money on the lack of wealth possessed by the homeless, as was done when the fashion
