Although his name is not recognized by many, John Dalton made some of the most important scientific discoveries of the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Born September 6, 1766 in Eaglesfield, Cumberland, England, Dalton is recognized by the more knowledgeable students of the history of science as one of the
fathers of physical science (Biography of John Dalton, 1999). He is credited with the development of the atomic theory of matter (Biography of John Dalton, 1999).
Daltons life is interesting both from the perspective of the contributions he made to physics and chemistry and for his personal strength and insight.
From a Quaker family, Dalton became headmaster of a Quaker school when he was only twelve years old (Biography of John Dalton, 1999)! At age fourteen he moved
to another school and taught there as well (Biography of John Dalton, 1999). When he was twenty-six Dalton took a new
teaching position at New College in Manchester, a prestigious college that was, for non-Catholics, the equivalent of Cambridge and Oxford (Biography of John Dalton, 1999). In 1800, at the
age of thirty-four he resigned from his teaching position at New College and became secretary of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society (Biography of John Dalton, 1999). He simultaneously
tutored in mathematics and chemistry and in 1817 he became president of the Philosophical Society, a position that he retained some twenty-seven years, up till his death in 1844 (Biography
