He was, in most regards, a very good man with an intelligence that served to promote the truly spiritual nature of the Christian faith. Even today his work is still referred to in studying the Bible and anything of theological interest. As one author notes, John Calvin is "generally regarded as second in importance only to Martin Luther as a key figure in the Protestant Reformation" (Armstrong, 2005). The following paper examines the life and impact of the life of John Calvin. John Calvin John Calvin was born in in July of 1509 in France where he received his formal education for the priesthood (John Calvin: Biographical Sketch, 2005). "His father was secretary to the bishop who desired to see his son study theology, but later, due to a rift that formed between him and the Catholic Church, decided it would be more beneficial and lucrative for him to study law" (McMahon, 1995). He was one of many students who were really beginning to appreciate the reformation movements and the humanistic movements of his time (John Calvin: Biographical Sketch, 2005). He engaged in studies involving the Greek Bible and published, in 1532, "a commentary on Senecas De Clementia, proving his skills as a humanist scholar" (John Calvin: Biographical Sketch, 2005). Following this it appears as though Calvin underwent many spiritual changes. During the new few years he essentially avoided church authorities although he still studied, wrote, and began to formulate his own form of theology through the Bible and Christian tradition (John Calvin: Biographical Sketch, 2005).
