The penance period begins with Rosh Hashanah (Anonymous 1999, 53). This festival celebrates the autumn harvest and lasts for seven days, ending with Yom Kippur (Anonymous 1999, 53). Yom Kippur is the "Day of Atonement" and is the holiest of all days in the Jewish year (Anonymous 1999, 53). It is a day that the people spend "in fasting, prayer, and confession" (Anonymous 1999, 53). It was an important festival and all Jews celebrated it. The fact that Jesus attended the celebration is a testament to His heritage as well as to His mission on earth. The living water Jesus refers to in this passage would have been very meaningful to the people at that time. This festival is celebrated in the fall, after the dry summer months. Further, Pilate had built an aqueduct to assure the Temple in Jerusalem had enough water (Balabanski 2005, 132). In fact, Pilate had taken money to build the that aqueduct and the people were angry (Balabanski 2005, 132). There were demonstrations that Pilates soldiers squashed by killing many of the demonstrators (Balabanski 2005, 132). Jesus attended this festival secretly because He knew people were debating who He was (John 7:10). People were already plotting against Him (Kemeza 2002, 17). Even so, before the festival was half over, Jesus began teaching (John 7:14). John 7:38-39 would have reminded First Century people of the prophecies in the Old Testament.
