prayer, Christ offers a theological perspective that can guide the lives and services of modern Christians. This prayer, essentially, sums up the thrust of his ministry, relating it to the
future, that is, relating it specifically to us. Analysis of John 17:6-10 shows the central theme of Christs words, which is that Christians are one with God, in a manner
analogous to the way that Jesus was one with God. The awesome complexity of this revelation has implications that are still being pondered by theologians.
These verses are some of the most passionate attributed to Jesus, and they have inspired a good deal of theological interpretation. Lueking (1997) points out that the prayer
featured in John 17 is a direct intercession by Jesus with God the Father on behalf of Christians. It is a heartfelt plea that God will protect those who remain
in the world, yet hated by the world, and he asks that God aid them in finding the inner resources of spirit in order to carry forth Christs message to
the world (Lueking, 1997). As this indicates, Luekings interpretation of these verses is fairly straight forward, as he sees it as a plea for unity in the church after Christs
