a family that traditionally supplied musicians to the churches and town bands of the region (Machlis, 1970). Orphaned by the age of ten, he was raised by his older brother,
who was an organist and who prepared young Johann for the family profession. His professional life began at the age of eighteen when he was appointed as organist to a
church in Arnstadt. At the age of thirty-eight, Bach was appointed to one of the most important posts in Germany, the Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig (Machlis, 1970). He
held this post for twenty-seven years and produced some of his most important work during this time. Married twice (his first wife died), Bach was the father of twenty children,
seven by his first marriage and thirteen by the second; however, half of these children did not survive infancy. Four of his sons became the leading composers of the next
generation (Machlis, 1970). Whatever form of music Bach addressed, he brought it to his highest development to that point in history, His artistry cut across cultural boundaries, bringing "the
three great national traditions of his time -- German, French and Italian -- into a convincing unity" (Machlis, 1970, p. 288). His chief inspiration was his dedication to God.
Bach considered music to be "a harmonious euphony to the Glory of God" (Machlis, 1970,p. 288). His primary instrument was the organ. The music that Bach created for this
instrument is still considered to be the high point in its literature (Machlis, 1970). In the field of keyboard music, Bachs greatest accomplishment, one that radically changed the course of
