forward and developed. All workers are not equal; many studies have demonstrated that approaches which consider needs other than financial remuneration can create a workforce that has a higher level
of productivity. This is due to the way they are motivated and the satisfaction they feel in relationship to their workplace. These theories are applied widely and may be
seen in any industry from manufacturing to the retail supermarket employees. Many industries have benefited from the knowledge of motivational theories in order to ensure employees are satisfied; most
studies have focused on indusial application where productivity is easy to measure. However, the retail and services industries can also gain from employees ensuring employees are satisfied. The higher level
of interaction between employee and customer reflects in the finished product and can have a major on the service experience. Services industries can see this measured directly with customers satisfaction
surveys, and many hotels in Kuwait already follow this strategy (Business Traveller, 2003, Cronin and Taylor, 1994). The retail sector is often ignored, until the work of Raven and Welsh,
(2004) this industry in Kuwait had received little, if any, specific attention. The supermarkets, as a part of the retail industry may have taken advantage of the well documented motivational
theories, but this has not been specifically studied in any academic papers. This is also a very relevant area of study as
