Sometimes a staff is cut to little more than a skeleton crew when workloads are just as heavy, creating stress, anxiety and pressure for the employees expected to carry the burden. Job satisfaction becomes a considerable issue with the remaining staff falling into a vicious cycle of angst and burnout. It is not surprising how "citizens of the United States have the most severe problem with work-life balance" (Oswald, 2002), a reality that often segues into stress and safety issues that impact job satisfaction. Statistics from 2002 demonstrate how workers were very or completely satisfied (49%), illustrating a trend that has experienced an increase in satisfaction rates over the past decade: o 1970s: 56% of Americans were extremely satisfied at work o 1980s: 52% were extremely satisfied o 1990s: 47% were extremely satisfied (Oswald, 2002). Stress is one aspect of work that virtually everyone experiences at one time or another; that such pressure can elevate to harmful levels has become quite a focal point of understanding organizational transformation. When people are in the throes of work-related stress, these dissatisfactions manifest themselves in a number of recognizable ways; tardiness, excessive absenteeism and disability claims are just a few of the indicators that point toward stressful working conditions.
