Discussion Searches for things like "top ten work motivators" and "reasons for work" and similar terms didnt return a handy list, probably because there are literally as many motives for working as there are workers. But we can piece together several references and see what we get. An article from 1964 directly addresses the issue of motivation, though it concentrates on scientists. The article says that in 1949, researchers Clark Ahlberg and John Haney interviewed 355 scientists and engineers "who had left government positions the previous year" asking why they had left their jobs and why they had gone to work for the government in the first place (Friedlander and Walton, 1964). They also asked what they didnt like about their jobs; they anticipated that the ranking of responses would be similar, but it was not. The reasons the scientists gave for joining the government in the first place, in decreasing order from most important to least, were "a chance to do interesting, challenging, and important work; favorable economic attractions; and an opportunity to gain personal work experience" (Friedlander and Walton, 1964, p. 194). The reasons the left the jobs were: "poor pay and small chance of economic advancement, location of job, and a desire to return to school" (Friedlander and Walton, 1964, p. 194). The reasons they gave for disliking the government job included "dissatisfaction with administration and housekeeping functions, ... incompetent and inconsiderate supervision and co-workers" and the way in which technical programs were administered (Friedlander and Walton, 1964, p. 194).
