defined as a "state of emotional and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress" (Smith, Jaffe-Gill, Segal and Segal, 2007). Burnout can occur when a person feels unable to
meet the demands that are constantly placed on him; this feeling of being constantly overwhelmed leads to a loss of "interest or motivation" that led the person to take the
job in the first place (Smith, Jaffe-Gill, Segal and Segal, 2007). An employee who is burning out will start to lose energy, find their productivity reduced, and may feel "increasingly
hopeless, powerless, cynical and resentful" (Smith, Jaffe-Gill, Segal and Segal, 2007). Burnout can cause such unhappiness that it finally threatens the persons career, health and personal relationships (Smith, Jaffe-Gill, Segal
and Segal, 2007). The Signs and Symptoms of Job Burnout There are literally thousands of sources that describe the signs and symptoms of burnout, indicating that the condition is well-known
and serious enough to warrant a great deal of study. Mary Rau-Foster writes, "[H]igh stress and a sense of loss of control over ones life and business contribute to a
stress syndrome known as burnout" (Rau-Foster, 2000). Among the symptoms of the condition are physical exhaustion, emotional exhaustion, "sadness and depression," insomnia, increased cynicism, defensiveness, gastrointestinal problems, a sense of
detachment, and a "loss of satisfaction or sense of accomplishment" (Rau-Foster, 2000). Canaff suggests that a person suffering from burnout will dread going to work; experience "fatigue and low energy
levels" at work; become bored easily; find once-enjoyable activities "drudgery"; become depressed on Sunday because work starts the next day; become cynical; find themselves easily annoyed; find their non-work relationships
