Project management is essential for todays organizations. Projects fail at an alarming rate. This is especially true of IT projects but overall, projects have a fail rate higher than fifty percent. This suggests that project managers must be very skilled and knowledgeable about managing projects. The job analysis for project managers will combine interviews, task inventory, and an examination of manuals and reference materials (HR Management, 2010). The first step is to review documents to determine the competencies needed for this job by examining job descriptions and information about project managers. The tasks and competencies are: * Create and execute project work plans, which will likely be modified or adapted at some point in the process (Alexandrou, 2010). * Identify all of the resources that will be needed for each specific project and assign specific responsibilities to each member of the project team (Alexandrou, 2010). * Monitor and manage daily operational aspects of the project (Alexandrou, 2010). * Use various project management tools that will assure success and achievement (Alexandrou, 2010). Some of these strategies and techniques include PERT and GANTT charts. * Be aware of and minimize risk associated with the project (Alexandrou, 2010). * Track and develop reports regarding team hours and expenses on a regular basis, usually weekly (Alexandrou, 2010).
