Introduction In Louisa May Alcotts novel "Little Women" we are presented with the story of a family. In this family there are several daughters and they all struggle to find their place in the world. All of them except one seems to simply follow the path laid out for all woman, a path that involves marriage and children. The character of Jo, however, is one that speaks of the modern woman to some extent. She is, in many ways, representative of the writer herself and as such is an author and a somewhat independent woman. However, this character, Jo, slowly develops into a woman who is not incredibly unlike the common dependent woman of the late 19th century. The following paper examines the development of Jo, illustrating how she developed into a more traditional woman because Alcott could not truly offer us a powerfully independent woman and expect the book to do well, or be received well, by publishers and readers during the 19th century. Jo in Little Women In the beginning of Alcotts novel we see Jo as a very independent young woman, a tomboy who will not adhere to the rules associated with her position as a female in her society. This is evident in the following excerpt when Jo and her sisters are talking about how hard they each work and how they want to spend the money they have earned on things for themselves for Christmas. One sister notes that Jo uses a lot of slang, something we know that women do not do in these times: "Jo does use such slang words! observed Amy, with a reproving look at the long figure stretched on the rug. Jo immediately sat up, put her hands in her pockets, and began to whistle. Dont, Jo. ...
