be treated as a boy in the adventure, having only a role of adhering to the laws of the grown men. Or, one would expect Jim, who is also the
narrator, to speak as though he were a boy, inexperienced and confused as adventures take place. But, for the most part it appears as though Jim does not think of
himself as a boy and the men around him do not think of him as a boy either. The following paper examines this aspect of the novel. Jim
in Treasure Island In the very beginning of the story the reader sees that Jim is part of the family business, of housing
people who are traveling. He notes, "Well, mother was upstairs with father and I was laying the breakfast-table against the captains return when the parlour door opened and a man
stepped in on whom I had never set my eyes before" (Stevenson Chapter 2). In this Jim seems to speak as though he were an adult. One gathers the impression
that he is clearly writing this story as an adult, and speaking of his past adventures, but regardless he seems to remember being something of an adult although he was
a boy. It seems important to understand that children, at the time this story takes place, were treated as adults in many
cases and so they thought of themselves as adults. They were responsible for helping the family out, engaging in the family business, and otherwise doing the same things that adults
did, aside from completely running a household or a business. In fact, one could say that people had children in order to help out, to further a business or a
