Only a few bands in musical history have managed to cross the boundaries of time, and make the same lasting
impression on both young and old listeners alike. The Doors are one such band. The mythology surrounding the late Jim Morrison and The Doors has been so heady
that it almost obscures their contribution to a major shift in American rock & roll. Their music borrowed elements from American jazz and blues, British psychedelic rock, and the surfer
guitar riffs of Southern California. Moreover, in 1967 they broke the mold of the conventional hit pop song when "Light My Fire" went straight to the top of the
charts (Hopkins, Sugerman). Couched between the north and south end of LAs surf beaches is the city of Venice, and
in1965 it had long been abandoned by the body-worshiping surf n sun set. The Venice of the sixties was almost worthy of being christened the New World since beat poetry,
beach-goers mixed amiably with antiquated Jewish pensioners, who gathered in front of the synagogues while mingling with the psyched-up, mystical hippies on the boardwalk. This was the
place that Fate chose to bring four artists together -- each ready to express his own musical sensibility - and The Doors soon made their psychedelic rock sound the audio-anthem
of Los Angeles (Hopkins, Sugerman and See Also Simmonsen, 2001). Before Jim wrote, "Make a grave for the unknown soldier nestled
