Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 7 page paper discussing the longevity of the Jews as a distinct group of people. If anything about the number or consequence of the Jews should have changed in the more than 100 years since Mark Twain mused about their great longevity, it is that the Jew "should" be much more diminished in stature and prosperity than even in the closing years of the 19th century. Of course we know such not to be the case, despite facts of 20th century history. The paper discusses the Jews' adherence to ancient rules and faithful observance of tradition as contributing to Jews' continued tenacity. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

the Jews is as relevant today as it was when the words were written: If the statistics are right, the Jews constitute
but one percent of the human race. It suggests a nebulous dim puff of star dust lost in the blaze of the Milky Way. Properly the Jew ought hardly to
be heard of, but he is heard of, has always been heard of. He is as prominent on the planet as any other people, and his commercial importance is extravagantly
out of proportion to the smallness of his bulk (Twain). If anything about the number or consequence of the Jews should have
changed in the more than 100 years since Mark Twain wrote these words, it is that the Jew should be much more diminished in stature and prosperity than even in
the closing years of the 19th century. Of course we know such not to be the case, even given Hitlers attempts - and relative success - to eradicate the
group from the face of the earth. Explaining the continued persistence of the Jews consistently points to the necessity of heeding Gods words
to Jeremiah, words intended for the Jewish nation: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm
you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You
will seek me and find me ... I will be found by you ... and will bring you back from captivity (Jeremiah 29:11-14a).
