A 12 page research paper that investigates this issue. There has been a dramatic increase in recent decades in interfaith marriages. Historically, Catholicism and Judaism have taken the strictest position against adherents to these faiths marrying outsiders to their beliefs. An examination of the rationales behind each of these positions shows that the reasons why leaders in each faith have traditionally opposed intermarriage are remarkably similar. Furthermore, the current situation in regards to the effects of interfaith marriage on Judaism, as practiced in the US, shows that there is legitimacy to the traditional position, which opposes interfaith marriage. This discussion explores the historical and contemporary data on intermarriage between Jews and Catholics and then speculates on future ramifications of current trends. Bibliography list 25 sources.

Marriages between Jews and Christians are common place in North Americans secularly oriented societies (Glotzer 666). However, in some quarters, particularly in Jewish communities, these marriages are a source for
continuing concern. Jane Kaplan, in her book Interfaith Families, interviewed Jewish/Christian couples regarding their marriages and the effect that a mixed marriage has had on their religious life (Glotzer 666).
According to these accounts, it is not unusual for individuals to discover the significance and intensity of their religious identity only after marrying a person of another faith (Glotzer 666).
Citing the work of Greeley, who conducted studies in both 1989 and 1990, Sander argues that the rate of intermarriage for Catholics has not changed much during the past
fifty years (Sander 27). However, other sources indicate that the rate of intermarriage is on the rise. The 2000 National Jewish Population Survey found that only a third of interfaith
couples raise their children as Jewish, despite the continuing and increasing efforts of both Reform and Conservative Jewish communities to welcome interfaith couples (Level: Basic). Writing in the 1980s, Brooklyn
