while many things have changed in the last two thousand years, people have not. Therefore, what constitutes good instruction today also applied in biblical times. Jesus began with what the
learner already knew and couched his lessons in the cultural symbols that were already familiar to his listeners. He always had a clear objective in mind and developed every detail
of his "lesson" toward illuminating that goal. Jesus taught primarily through the use of parables, which is a method in keeping with his time and culture.
The Gospels contain approximately 65 units of sayings that have been identified by scholars as parables (McGaugby, 2001). By a "parable," scholars refer to "a figure
of speech in which a comparison is made between Gods kingdom, actions, or expectations and something in this world, real or imagined" (McGaugby, 2001, p. 829). As this definition suggests,
Jesus can be viewed as a theologian who made theological statement to his disciples through the use of parables (McGaugby, 2001). Wierzbicka (1998) points out that modern day readers
comprehend Jesus lessons, i.e. his parables, better when they consider them in the context of "drohrede," a literary genre central to the Hebrew Bible. "Drohrede," or "prophetic warning" utilizes
exaggeration to stress a point (p. 22). Wierzbicka cites many instances where this applies, such as the Jesus referring to a camel passing through the eye of needle. But Wierzbicka
