as casting out demons (Toner). In other words, Jesus acted as an exorcist. Furthermore, Jesus empowered his disciples to also cast out demons and in Mark 16:17, Jesus promised this
powers to believers (Toner). As this suggests, exorcism is not regarded by scripture as superstition (Davies 90). A modern view of exorcism, expressed with the lexicon of science, states
that "exorcism may be assessed as other therapies, with reference to the dynamic process in the therapeutic session, client-therapist relationship and effectiveness of technique" (Ward 128). Some exorcisms stand up
to such scrutiny better than others. Certainly, the exorcisms described in scripture that were performed by Jesus were quite successful, with the possessed returned to normal life. It is
interesting to note that Marks Gospel specifically indicates that it was the demon that recognized the identity of Jesus (Davies 93). Mark states that "when ever the unclean spirits beheld
him, they fell down before him and cried out You are the Son of God (3:11) (Davies 93). As this indicates, Jesus exorcisms were connected to his identity, as the
"unclean spirits knew who Jesus was" (Davies 94). Jesus method of exorcism was to "cast out demons by the spirit of God" (Davies 97). In doing so, Jesus did not
utilize the spirit of God, as his identity was merged with that spirit. In casting out demons, Jesus simply speaks and gives a command and healing occurs. The incidents during
