villages of Galilee to hear him speak. Some dismissed him; some gave up everything and followed him. Today, as in his own era, Jesus remains one of historys most
intriguing and enigmatic figures. The religion that was founded upon his teachers counts nearly one third of the worlds populations as its members.2
Yet, the precise meaning of his words and teachings are still the topic for heated debate. The following discussion will examine one aspect of that ministry - what
Jesus believed concerning money - its place, its use and its abuse --showing that Jesus teachings on this topic have been seriously misunderstood. It has often been interpreted by Christians
that Jesus intended all Christians to be poor; however, scripture indicates that this is not so. Jesus wasnt against money, per se, but rather was against the over-evaluation of
money, the worship of money, if you will. One of the most revealing and dramatic stories in the gospels concerning Jesus and money is, of course, when Jesus overturned
the tables of the moneychangers in the temple. Besides the symbolism of this act, which was to purify the temple from a "den of thieves," it was also a definitive
act that lead directly to his arrest and execution.3 That is, this is the case in Matthew, Mark and Luke, who each depict Jesus doing this after his final entry
