Examination of these religions shows the differences between these two major world religions, but also that, at their heart, are similarities that indicate the pervasiveness of divine truth. Two
sects of Buddhism emerged shortly after his death and within 400 years, there were twenty variation of Buddhism (Williams). Similarly, primitive Christianity involved variations that were labeled "heresies" by the
Catholic Church, but also the Roman Catholic Church splintered into the Eastern Orthodox and then into various sects of Protestantism during the Reformation. However, writing discovered in 1947 in Egypt,
such as the Gospel of Thomas, indicate that primitive Christianity was quite similar to Buddhist beliefs (Williams). But while the similarities between Buddhist and Christian beliefs are many, there
are also differences. First of all, Buddhists believe in reincarnation, which is the "possibility for human beings to live several" lifetimes (Hanh). If an individual soul fails to find Nirvana
or "salvation," that soul can be reborn and have another opportunity to gain Enlightenment (Hanh). In Christian belief, each life is unique and constitutes that souls " only chance at
salvation" (Hanh). Buddhism holds that individuality is an illusion and teaches a belief in the "non-self" or "anatta" (Hanh). Christianity holds a different worldview, teaching that not only is the
individual a "person" that is a "self," but God, also, is "a person and He has a self" (Hanh). In short, "Buddhism teaches that there is no self, but in
Christianity there is a real self" (Hanh). As this indicates, the differences between Buddhism and Christianity lie not in the teachings of either Buddha or Jesus, as these teachings
