Christianity can be controversial, while some protestant or more progressive Christian churches will allow women to be preachers and ordained, others, such as the Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox
Church remain conservative limiting the role of women retaining a highly patriarchal structure. The approach to women reflects the religious texts and the beliefs regarding the guidance from God, and
from his son Jesus. Assessing the views of Jesus on women may be key in the way that those in power determining the place and role of women in the
church and in society at large (Kelsey, 1997). Determining the views of Jesus is difficult, with the only surviving religious texts provides a challenge, not all surviving texts form
a part of the bible and invariably the gospels, which are the primary source of information, are subject to the writers bias and where written many years later (Jordaan, 2009).
Before looking at the texts it is necessary to remember that any historical document, record or evidence of a particular point in time needs to be examined within the
context of the time. Meanings, values and attitudes change, which in turn can shift an interpretation, therefore, it is valuable to look at the rights and role of women in
Palestine during the time of Jesus, and interpret his reported words within that context. The role and perceptions of women with in his contempt the society need to be
looked at in terms of first century Jewish Palestine. Examining literature that indicates the role of women can become difficult, as much of the primary evidence; rabbinic literature, is undated
