Another reason for parables was that Jesus intended people to think and He wanted those who would believe to understand what He was saying. Christs life was an example of love, hope, humility, kindness and compassion. He consistently violated typical and accepted behaviors in order to teach the grander lessons of life. We recall the time He spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well, an act that surprised His Apostles. The Samaritans were not accepted by the Jews and so, Christ used a Samaritan as an example of goodness and kindness, a Samaritan man with compassion and whose actions illustrated hospitality. Hospitality is seen throughout the entire Bible. It was far more important in the past than it seems to be today. During the time of Jesus, hospitality was embedded in the social fabric of the time.1 John Koenig said, "according to this tradition...hospitality is seen as one of the pillars of morality upon which the universe stands."2 Abernathy explains that hospitality was a tradition between the host and the guest. Often, the pair would begin as strangers and the traditions associated with hospitality provided a structured way of being in relationships, a way to be part of the community.3 Each person had a role - the host would extend a graceful welcome to the guest and the guest would receive the hosts hospitality with graciously.4 It was not acceptable for either party to violate their respective obligations in the relationship.5 In Luke 10:25-37, Jesus is with a group when an expert in the law asked Him what he needed to do to gain eternal life.
