been recognized that there are distinct differences in style and substance between the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) and the Gospel according to John. However, modern scholars also note
the distinct differences between the synoptic gospels as well. For example, consider the story of the Resurrection. Each gospel agrees that a woman came to the tomb of
Jesus at dawn, but rather there was one woman, or two, or three differs with each account. On arriving at the tome, the women find that, in one version, the
rock has been rolled away by an earthquake. One angel, and in other accounts, two angels, are waiting inside the tomb. The sight of the angels scared the guards into
paralysis (when there are guards). The angel rolls back the rock (unless it has already been rolled back by the earthquake); and so it goes with the facts of the
story changing from one gospel to the next (Camille, 2001). Such inconsistencies did not disturb ancient readers because the evangelists who wrote the gospels operated under totally different cultural expectations.
As Camille (2001) puts it, they were not concerned with details, but rather with the "essence of what is eternally and universally true" (p. 45). The Gospels were not written
in order to give an accurate chronology of Jesus ministry, but rather to reveal who Jesus character --who he was (and "is" in the hearts of Christians) (Witherington, 1998).
The reasons behind the differences in presentation between the Gospels has to do with the cultural and ethnic background of the biblical
