Some believe that the Shroud was produced during the middle ages since the production of fake holy relics was a booming business at that time. Paradoxically, it is the scientific
evidence which has been instrumental in converting many scientists into believers in the Shrouds authenticity. Rather then disproving the Shrouds origin, scientific evidence indicates that the Shroud is the greatest
archeological, as well as religious, relic of all time. There is other evidence supporting this position as well. All of the observable details, i.e. details which can be seen without
electronic aid, support the authenticity of the article. Historically, there is solid evidence to show that the Shroud existed before fake religious artifacts were being so industriously produced in the
middle ages. But, by far, it is the scientific evidence which bolsters the authenticity of the Shroud more then anything else. There is more scientific evidenced proving that the Shroud
is really the burial cloth of Christ, then there is showing the opposite opinion. The results of an investigation conducted by the 1978 Shroud of Turin Research Team overwhelming supported
the Shrouds authenticity. Over 1000 special tests were conducted, and over 32,000 photographs were taken. Tests showed conclusively that the image on the cloth was not painted, but resulted from
actual physical and chemical changes that came from within the fibers themselves. (Whanger URL) Scientific testing has revealed that the image is a photographic negative. Further examination has revealed
that the image is consistent with that of a three-dimensional image. (Woodard 30) This fact mystifies unbelievers since photography was not discovered until the later part of the nineteenth century.
