church, and also that the priest was a woman and the tombstone was purchased and set in place by her husband.1 The tombstone inscription indicates that the grave is that of "Leta, the priest."2 As this suggests, as late as the fifth and sixth centuries, women in early Christian communities could be found who exercised priestly authority within the early Christian church.3 However, by the reign of Pope Gelasius in the late fifth century, this practice had become strongly condemned, which is as fact shown by letter from Pope Gelasius dated from this period.4 In the centuries immediately following the life of Christ in which the nascent church was established, modern scholarship suggests that women played an active role in the early church. Many contemporary scholars now assert that women once widely performed "liturgical roles, including those of baptism and giving the eucharist."5 Considering this, the student of theology is confronted with several questions, which concern what the gospel accounts of Jesus life convey concerning Christs attitudes toward women, but also how the early Christian church viewed women. To explore these questions, this review of literature looks specifically at what scholarship reveals about the Lukes Gospel. The principal research question addressed is: "Does Lukes gospel accurately relate Jesus attitude toward women or does it primarily reflect a later change in attitude, which originates with the early Christian communitys perspective." In order to establish a basis for this discussion, it is instructive to examine how various passages in Luke have been interpreted by scholarship.
