begins with Jesus. No human has ever seen God but many saw Jesus when He was incarnated, took on human likeness and lived amongst the people (Richstatter, 2011). In order to increase our understanding of sacrament, we must see Jesus in His humanity as the original sacrament. He was the first sacrament. He was the visible sign who brought grace to all who heeded Him (Richstatter, 2011). St. Thomas Aquinas provided the foundation for the premise that Jesus is Sacrament. Aquinas said the only way to understand the sacraments, a person must first understand that Jesus is the primordial sacrament (Kain, 2009). And, Jesus is the Incarnate Word. Jesus is the Sacrament of God; He guides us all to who and what God is. Kain (2009) calls upon the Greek work icon which refers to reality, thus, Jesus is the icon of God. One way He did this was with His frequent use of the word Abba which means Father (Kain, 2009). When He used the term Abba, Jesus was referring to His oneness with the Father (Kain, 2009). This was even difficult for His Apostles to understand. This was the reason Jesus told them so many stories because through stories, they could gain a better understanding. The Catholic Catechism explains that the sacraments are the visible signs of the mystery of salvation with salvation being the hidden reality. Christ is the primary mystery of salvation: "For there is no other mystery of God, except Christ" (St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 2011). As the mystery of salvation Jesus is the first sacrament offered to man. The Church is also a sacrament. It is the outward sign of communion with God.
