political and religious rivalry. The following paper examines Jerusalem in 1948, while also discussing the time before and after that eventful year. Jerusalem: Divided City
"Before 1948 Jerusalem was a Palestinian city and capital of Palestine, it had a Palestinian mayor while the whole of Palestine was under the rule of
the British Empire represented by the British High Commissioner with his government offices in Jabal El-Mukaber in the city" (Bayt Mal Al Qods Al Sharif Agency, 2006). It was several
years prior to that, in 1917, that the British had gibven the Jews a promise that they would be given a homeland in Palestine (Bayt Mal Al Qods Al Sharif
Agency, 2006). The Jewish people took this to heart and may Jews immigrated to the country and with the Britishs help the Jews began to rise in power in Jerusalem
and elsewhere in Palestaine (Bayt Mal Al Qods Al Sharif Agency, 2006). "The Palestinians in the meantime were suppressed, their economic conditions made worse, little education and no health services"
(Bayt Mal Al Qods Al Sharif Agency, 2006). And, to further tighten the tensions the British court-martialled Palestinians who possessed guns, and the Palestinians who tried to resist the arrival
and settling of the Jewish people were hunted down and executed in many cases (Bayt Mal Al Qods Al Sharif Agency, 2006).
