is the fact that also offer hope. The prophetic basis for hope As theologian and author Walter Brueggemann maintains the central tenet in "Jeremiahs rhetoric is an ongoing refrain
that seeks to hold together texts full of grief with texts full of hope" (Lessing, 2007, p. 610). In Jeremiah, there is the acknowledgement that life can be "shattering," but
on the other hand, there is a refusal to give in to feelings of "despair and abandonment" (Lessing, 2007, p. 610). As this suggests, two themes are evident throughout the
Book of Jeremiah. First of all, the warnings of God concerning sin are prominent throughout this text, but also there is also the "message of hope and restoration," which is
based upon the actions of the people and whether or not they can bring themselves to sincerely repent (Keathley, 2007). In Jeremiah, there is the warning, which goes unheeded
and leads inevitably to the defeat of Israel and the desolation of Jerusalem, which is expressed in Lamentations. The theme of this text is a "lament or mourning over the
woes that had fallen on sinful Judah, which included the "destruction of the holy city and the temple" (Keathley, 2007). The message of Lamentations is that, despite their sin, God
will show the people of Israel his mercy if they repent. Jeremiah 3:22-23 promises that through "the Lords mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are
