the Declaration of Independence. The people were determined to be free of Great Britain and his words reflected that need and dream of the people. He notes, "When in the
Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth,
the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Natures God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare
the causes which impel them to the separation" (Jefferson, 1776). In this one sees that Jefferson is speaking to the people, assuming their intelligence and understanding of the situation, and
then he moves on to speak of simple dreams they all share, creating a sense of unity for all people in stating, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that
all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" (Jefferson, 1776). These
were words that the people, all people of the day, could understand and relate to, and they still stand as the most powerful words defining the government and the society
of the United States today. It speaks of the soul of the people and their dreams and desires and the foundations of their beliefs, then and now. Lincoln
