contact rather than impersonal, technical interaction. This paper explores her theory of human caring. Discussion Jean Watsons history: Dr. Jean Watson was born in West Virginia and now lives in
Boulder, Colorado, where she is Distinguished Professor of Nursing and the Murchison-Scoville Chair in Caring Science at the University of Colorado (Cara). She earned her undergraduate degree in "nursing and
psychology, her masters degree in psychiatric-mental health nursing, and continued to earn her Ph.D. in educational psychology and counseling" at Colorado (Cara). She is the founder of the Center for
Human Caring, located in Colorado; in addition, Dr. Watson is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (Cara). She has published numerous works describing her theory of caring, which
is now used by nurses all over the world (Cara). She has received several honorary doctoral degrees along with a number of national and international awards (Cara). Her philosophy and
how she arrived at her theory: Watson developed her theory between 1975-1979, during which time she was already teaching at Colorado (Favero et al, 2009). The theory came from "the
results of studies accomplished by the author along her Doctorate in Clinic and Social Psychology" (Favero et al, 2009). In other words, Watsons theory came from her observations of the
nursing profession and patient care while she studied for her doctorate. At its most basic, the theory says that a patient is a while person, body, mind and spirit, and
