was in the 1970s that Jean Watson (2000) formulated her theory of nursing, one that resulted from her work in nursing at a time when nursing was beginning to emerge
as a separate profession. Watsons (2000) theory of human caring is one that verbalizes some of those highest ideals of the ways that human beings should treat each other.
It assumes technical strength on the part of the nurse, and a true desire to serve others. In the process, the theory also provides benefit to those nurses
practicing it. The purpose here is to discuss Watsons (2000) theory and apply it to a clinical setting. Biographical Information Jean Watson
founded the original Center for Human Caring in Colorado and is a "Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She previously served as Dean of Nursing at the University
Health Sciences Center and is a Past President of the National League for Nursing" (Jean Watson). Her undergraduate and graduate degrees are in nursing and psychiatric-mental health nursing; she
"holds her PhD in educational psychology and counseling. She is a widely published author and recipient of several awards and honors" (Jean Watson).
She has promoted her theory of human caring throughout the world from various positions including lecturer at several universities and director of the Center for Human Caring. Watsons Theory
of Human Caring Watson (2000) writes that she considers her work to be a "philosophical, ethical, intellectual blueprint for nursings evolving disciplinary/professional matrix,
rather than a specific theory per s?." The theory provides a framework within which nurses can approach either specific cases or their entire nursing career.
