Rogers theories. She was most impressed with his phenomenological psychology (Tourville and Ingalls, 2003). She was also influenced by de Chardin, Sartre, Kierkegaard and others. Her own experience with so
many from other cultures acted as a basis for her theory as well. While 1979 is used as the date Watson developed her theory, it was actually developed over at
least two decades and continues to evolve (Watson, 2007). Watsons model is often referred to as Transpersonal Caring because it acknowledges the unity in the world and the
belief that everyone is connected to everyone else. One of the principles of this philosophy is that when one person cares about another, the second will care about a third
and so on continuing along a universal path of caring. Watson proposed that caring is a natural thing with humans. When a nurse and a patient share a
caring experience, caring becomes a moral principle (Watson 1979, p. 9). Caring happens between two people during their normal and routine interactions. Watson said that caring is a science "that
encompasses a humanitarian, human science orientation, human caring processes, phenomena, and experiences" (Vance, 2003). Personal interactions and building relationships are components in the science of caring. Caring is a
