For those who are unfamiliar with the play, it is set in Venice and considers how the title character, a middle-aged and recently married Moorish military commander, falls victim
to the insecurities that make him a prisoner of his dark side. The most devastating of Othellos flawed nature is his susceptibility to jealousy, which fuels his violent rage
and propels the play to its climactic and tragic conclusion. Within the tragic construct, Shakespeare examines the theme of jealousy through his vivid characterizations, which enabled him to explore
it inwardly, through their thoughts and fears, and outwardly, through their actions. It is recommended that the student who is writing about this topic consider how Shakespeare conveyed the theme
of jealousy. He revealed it as a kind of mask that veiled the feelings of inadequacy that existed within his major characters (Bloom 2). As human fears escalate,
this mask takes on a life of its own, becoming a monstrous presence that is eventually all consuming. The male characters, in particular, easily fall prey to jealousy, for
as literary critic Harold Bloom wrote, "The mens sense of identity and worth is dependent not only on their relations with women but on their bonds with other men who
guarantee their honor and reputation" (Bloom 89). This is demonstrated through the character of Iago. While extremely cunning and a gifted student of human nature, able to exploit
the weaknesses of others to his own advantage, Iago is, himself manipulated by the intense jealousy he feels toward General Othello, who has bypassed him for what he believes is
