fact that Shakespeare was undeniably a master in the development of tragic heroes and disastrous circumstances. For example, Othello and his jealousy leading him down a path of disaster; Hamlet
and his angst over his mothers marriage and his uncles betrayal; Romeo losing both his love and his life due to a message not being received; the dark insanity of
the characters of "Macbeth"; and, many other examples all demonstrate that Shakespeare saw both the heroic and tragic as virtually two sides of the same coin. There can never be
a hero without tragedy and their can never be comedy without misfortune. Taking such a premise a step further . . . there can never be understanding or sanity without
what is perceived as insanity. Such duplicity is particularly evident in "Othello." Othello is a bold yet weak character, a passionate but misdirected man, a leader of others who can
also be lead by his own doubts, jealousy, and the manipulations of Iago. He is ostensibly a sane man whose own fears and jealousies make him insane. The student who
examines the various motifs of "Othello" will see that each of these factors presents itself repeatedly in the play and each serves as an under-current that influences all other actions.
Shakespeare pulls his audiences into the experience of such dichotomy through careful development of each scene in every act. It is the rare play that a reader or audience
feels that he has added something simply as "filler" and therefore, it becomes essential that one work from the assumption that every action will eventually have some meaning in the
