two men who are somewhat lost in the world. They seek approval and the activity of others, and also seek the love of a woman. They are, in these respects,
individuals without much identity when they are alone. They need others in order to find some worth in their own lives. In the following paper we examine the two characters
individually as it applies to this perspective, and then present a brief comparison of the two. Jay Gatsby Jay is a man who was essentially nothing as a
youngster. He had nothing and was perhaps determined to make money and become powerful. He wanted the American Dream, not for his own enjoyment so much as for the enjoyment
of others, for the pride he could have when looking at what he achieved through the eyes of others. The most important person he seemed to wish to please was
Daisy, an old love that he could never get over. Through the character of Daisy and others we see that Jay is nothing without others. One of the most
significant chapters in this book, at it relates to the issues at hand, is Chapter 5. In this chapter Jay comes face to face with Daisy once more. He is
now wealthy and has achieved all he set out to do. In this chapter we see many different things which tell us that Jay is nothing without the existence and
approval of others. Our first indication is perhaps when Daisy is commenting on how his house is so large. She asks him how he can stand to live there all
alone. He replies: "I keep it always full of interesting people, night and day. People who do interesting things. Celebrated people..." (Fitzgerald NA). In this, combined with the fact that
