dreams were changing. It was a time that many argue saw the true beginning of a consumeristic culture as the American Dream turned to one of material wealth as a
sign of success, taking the focus away from honor and integrity. In the novel we are given the character of Jay Gatsby who essentially typifies this image. And, in offering
us an image of man who is turning away from the old way of the American Dream we are given a man who is essentially lost in his past, trying
to obtain that dream through focusing on his dreams of the past. In this he is a man who does not develop but rather looks at everything around him through
the eyes of others, hoping that they will somehow tell him he has achieved the dreams of the past. In the following paper we examine how Jay is stuck in
the past, a past that somehow begins and ends with Daisy, and a past that can only be realized by Jay when he looks through the eyes of others.
Jay Gatsby Jay is a man who was essentially nothing as a youngster. He had nothing and essentially grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. This lays
the foundation of the past that Jay will always try to defy. In essence, as he grows he tries to make money, become powerful, and essentially "buy his way into
a society that will never accept him."1 He wanted the American Dream, not for his own enjoyment so much as for the enjoyment of others, for the pride he could
