the old noble American Dream which argued that anyone who worked really hard with intelligence and honor could succeed and find happiness in that success. This old American Dream, in
the 1920s, made way for a more material American Dream wherein people believed if they worked hard they could be rich and possess many things. The Great Gatsby is a
novel of this change with Jay Gatsby as the man representative of the new American Dream. The following paper examines if Jay Gatsby is a great man based on his
representative nature regarding that American Dream. The paper argues that he is not a great man in relationship to the American Dream but may be a great man as an
individual. Jay Gatsby: A Great Man? In the story of Gatsby one sees that he was once a very poor man and yet he had the love of
Daisy. He went to war and she did not wait for him, perhaps knowing full well she would rather marry into money than marry out of love. Gatsby does whatever
necessary to get rich with the hopes of winning her back. He is, for all purposes, a symbol of how a man can work hard and raise himself up from
poverty to a position of wealth. While many people who wanted this particular American Dream of wealth and material possessions wanted the dream just to possess these things Gatsby
wanted that wealth to win Daisy back. He only made the money and threw parties with the hopes that she would come back into his life. He did not even
