in connection with policing, usually refers to the departments outreach efforts; many departments today recognize that they have lost touch with the people they are supposed to protect. In this
case, however, Jason Schechterles community experience is about the support he got from the people of Phoenix, and his decision to try and make things better for his fellow officers.
The story begins in March 2001, when Schechterles Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (CVPI) is rear-ended; the car explodes in a fireball, trapping Jason inside (Arrillaga). Hes very lucky: a
fire truck happened to be in the intersection when the collision occurred and got to him right away and got him out of the cruiser (Arrillaga). But he was also
unlucky: he had fourth degree burns to his head: "The burns had consumed the skin, tissue and fat in Jasons head, face and neck. His forehead was scorched right through
to the skull. His hands were seared down to the tendons" (Arrillaga). When he was admitted to the hospital, Dr. Caruso, who worked hard to save him, "ran his gloved
hands over Jasons head. It was hard as oak - a sign of fourth-degree burns, as severe as they get" (Arrillaga). Third-degree burns "sear through every skin layer; fourth-degree burns
go farther, eating through other tissue and fat" (Arrillaga). In order to save him and prevent infection from setting in, the doctors had to remove all the burned tissue, which
meant, in effect, removing Jasons face; they scraped all the way down to the bone (Arrillaga). Schechterle wasnt given much of a chance, but he fought like a tiger
and recovered enough to go back to work, though as a detective, not on the street; his marriage is solid and he has a good relationship with his children. (Arrillaga).
