acts on impulse and then is surprised when things dont turn out the way she dreamed they would. The foundation on which Mukherjee builds her tale is the continual change
in identity that her character undergoes. She becomes many different people, and each change is tied to her relationship with a man; yet each change can also be seen as
his idea, not hers. Probably the most provocative line in the book is Jasmines comment, "We murder who we were so we can rebirth ourselves in the image of dreams"
(Mukherjee, 1989, p. 29). The book can be seen as a series of actual and allegorical murders: Jasmine begins life as Jyoti; is then named Jasmine by her first husband;
then becomes Jassy, then Jane (Mukherjee, 1989). She also literally kills Half-Face, the man who smuggled her into America and raped her (Mukherjee, 1989). With each new persona, she begins
a new phase of her life, and at the end of the book, her story is still ongoing. Her story begins when a village seer tells her fortune, and she
hates what he says. So she defies him, saying that hes wrong and shell make her own future. But she doesnt: she lets the men in her life make it
instead. And she approaches relationships almost from a mythical standpoint. For instance, when she falls in love with Prakash, her first husband, she does so because she hears him talking
to her brothers, and likes his voice. It is a time of great unrest in India, and Jyotis brothers are arguing with a man named Sukhwinder, who is preaching hatred.
Into the middle of this argument comes another person, who challenges Sukhwinder. Jyoti doesnt see this man, has no idea who he is or what hes like, but her reaction
