to be seen. This paper considers his book Collapse, and takes two of the civilizations he mentions and analyzes his reasoning with regard to their failure. Discussion Diamonds argument is set forth in the books subtitle: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed. The word "choose" is vital, because it says quite simply that civilizations fall when they choose to, and succeed when they choose to do so. That begs the question, why would anyone choose to destroy themselves? The answer is that its not a deliberate act, but the consequence of poor decisions over time, with little thought of the future. Cynics would point out, perhaps rightly, that the United States is currently on a path to destruction, as we make decisions that ruin the environment and make it impossible to sustain life, so that we can have what we want in the short term. Examining the collapse of ancient civilizations means that we need to do something very difficult; we have to be able to accept the fact that "past peoples (some of them known to be ancestral to peoples currently alive and vocal) did things that contributed to their own decline" (Diamond, 2005, p.
