Japanese anime (animation) as it is of American animation. In the United States, there is a small but loyal following of Japanese anime, although overall the Japanese animation films
do not fare very well in the U.S. The reason that these Japanese films dont fare as well as their American counterparts in large part is the result of
animation techniques. Overall, most critics contend that the U.S. animation is of higher quality, thus drawing amore sophisticated audience in terms of technological expectations. In this way, a
comparison of the similarities and differences between these two different approaches to animation will help to reveal what makes one preferred by American audiences over another.
Its interesting to note that Japanese animation has actually experienced quite a bit of success in a number of other countries, such as in Canada
and France (Geocities, 2003). For instance, in Canada the Japanese show Sailor Moon is a huge hit (Geocities, 2003). However, critics assert that one of the major differences
between American and Japanese animation that accounts for this is that Japanese animation makes heavy use of references to Japanese culture (Geocities, 2003). The United States on the other
hand typically produces animation aimed either at a childrens market exclusively, or directly to hard-core animation buffs (Geocities, 2003). Therefore, Japanese animation, which often has thematically significant premises, simply
does not appeal to the majority of American viewers (Geocities, 2003). There are other significant differences between Japanese and American animation
