times. Poets, although from different places and cultures, utilize this form of expression and this type of literature to offer unique insight into the poets world or the world of the reader. They can range from simple and short expressions to incredibly long and drawn out epic poems. The following paper examines the poetry of Japan, through the monk Ryokan, and the poetry of the Western (Scottish) world, through Robert Burns, comparing and contrasting the two. The paper examines each poet and their work separately and then compares and contrasts the two. Ryokan Ryokan was born in the cold and isolated Chigo (now Nigata) province in the village of Izumozaki. His father was well off, a merchant and the village elder, who passed on to his son a love of poetry" (Hermitary). It appears as though he was a young child who adored literature and the quiet ways, involving himself in religious thought as well as poetry (Hermitary). He did not like the idea of going into the same sort of his business as his father and preferred to move forward to become "a Buddhist monk at the local Zen temple" where he trained with a master for 12 years (Hermitary). When his master died he began to wander and travel, as a pilgrim (Hermitary). After a few years of traveling it seems that a personal disaster hit him: "[A]t 38, his father died.
