At the turn of the twentieth century Japan was just beginning to take its place as one of the worlds modernized
states. Her thirst for other lands and resources, however, led her into the Russo-Japanese war and subsequently into World War II. The thesis can be presented that:
Japan entered the Russo-Japanese war in search of resources and she won that war because she was
able to focus her military efforts on a relatively small Russian naval fleet in a concentrated geographic area. When World War II rolled around, however, she was unsuccessful in
doing the same with the US and this ultimately resulted in Japans defeat.
Japan had transitioned to its modernized status over a relatively short period of time, a period of time culminating with the 1868 Meiji Restoration which had prompted the assimilation of
Western ideas and technological advancements. Obviously, Japan was pleased with her dramatic progress and was inspired to work even harder towards attaining even more progress in the future.
