by Japan. As with any war that involves a great number of powers, there are events that take place that may involve one particular group of soldiers, or issues that
take place regarding large numbers taking orders from their nation, which are horrendous in nature. War is a reality that often invokes the worst in human beings, as well as
the best. In the case of Japan there are many who argue that Japan still refuses to even truly admit they committed war crimes and this is, they argue, something
that must be dealt with. Despite the fact that this nation of Japan has come around full circle, adhering to rules laid down because of their defeat, and becoming an
incredibly successful, and democratic nation, many argue that they are still responsible for the war crimes. The following paper examines some of the war crimes committed by the Japanese, and
then examines why they seem reluctant to admit to these crimes. Japan and War Crimes One of the most famous war crimes committed by the Japanese, upon the
Chines, is known as Nanjing. In this event Japanese troops landed in the region and essentially engaged in the mass killings of civilians and the raping of women, among other
things. Resulting in 200,000 deaths, "The Nanjing Massacre is one of the best documented of Japanese atrocities because independent foreign witnesses observed and recorded the horrors inflicted on the Chinese
after the fall of their capital and because the Japanese foolishly left photographic records of the massacre."1 Japan has also bee cited as having turned many Chinese women into
